Wynton Marsalis’ Concerto for Trumpet was written for Michael Sachs and The Cleveland Orchestra as part of a co-commission with the Verbier Festival and the London Symphony Orchestra. The World Premiere performances took place on April 26, 27, and 28, 2023 at Severance Hall, with The Cleveland Orchestra and Music Director Franz Welser-Möst conducting. This concerto contains six movements and is 35 minutes long. The instrumentation is Strings – 3333 – 4331 – Timpani + 4 Percussion. As soloist, I used two trumpets – C trumpet for the first movement, B-flat for the second, third and fourth movement, and then back to the C trumpet for movements five and six, then going back to the B-flat for the ending passage of “elephant calls,” along with the five mutes (cup, straight, harmon, plunger, and felt hat) that Wynton asks for in the fourth movement.

A commercial recording of the concerto is set to be released later in 2023.
